Etsy
Etsy Image Size
Quick Answer
Etsy currently recommends listing photos with both width and height of at least 2000 pixels. Your first listing photo should be at least 635 px wide and 635 px high to avoid showing up lower in searches. Etsy's listing editor can still let you publish an image below the 2000-pixel recommendation, so 2000 × 2000 is a quality recommendation, not a required square aspect ratio.
For the first image, Etsy currently recommends a horizontal (landscape) or square original so the main focal point survives cropped thumbnail views. Etsy can show thumbnails in square, portrait, and landscape shapes, so keep the product centered with extra room around it.
You can currently add up to 20 photos and 2 videos to a listing.
Next, check dimensions with the Image Size Checker, preview the primary thumbnail inside Etsy, and then use the Listing Readiness Checker.

Is 2000 × 2000 Required on Etsy?
No. Etsy recommends both dimensions be at least 2000 pixels, but it does not say every listing photo must be a 1:1 square. Etsy's listing-creation guidance says the “at least 2000 pixels wide” message is a suggestion and sellers should still be able to continue publishing.
A 2400 × 3000 portrait image or 3000 × 2400 landscape image can satisfy the minimum-dimension recommendation without being square. What matters is adequate source resolution and a composition that survives Etsy's crops.
Why Does the First Photo Need 635 × 635 px?
Etsy's current image requirements say the first listing photo should have width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches.
That makes 635 × 635 a search-visibility threshold for the first photo, while 2000+ pixels in both dimensions is the stronger image-quality recommendation.
Do not confuse the two:
- 635 × 635: minimum first-photo threshold tied to lower search visibility.
- 2000+ × 2000+ dimensions: recommended high-resolution preparation target.
Thumbnail and Crop Behavior
Etsy's primary image becomes the listing thumbnail and can be presented in square, portrait, and landscape views. Etsy recommends using its thumbnail adjustment tool to preview how the image appears across placements.
Practical preparation:
- photograph or design with more space around the product than the final crop appears to need,
- keep the most important part of the item near the center,
- make sure the item remains clear in all three thumbnail shapes,
- use a consistent general shape across the gallery where practical,
- do not place critical labels or product details tight against the edges.
Etsy also currently advises avoiding a square crop when possible and uploading a horizontal/landscape original for flexible thumbnail use, even though the first image itself may be horizontal or square. The key is to preserve crop flexibility, not to force a single ratio.
File Types and Upload Reliability
Etsy supports these shop-image file types:
.jpg.gif.png.svg.heic
Animated GIF files are not supported, and transparency can render as black. Etsy also warns that image files larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on slower connections. This is upload-reliability guidance rather than a universal hard image-size cap.
Color and Compression
Etsy converts uploaded images to the sRGB color profile. If colors look wrong, convert the source to sRGB before upload.
Etsy also compresses image files to improve page performance and optimize for mobile display, so a sharp high-resolution source is preferable to enlarging a small image.
Search Visibility Beyond Pixel Dimensions
Image size is not the only image-quality signal. Etsy's photo-editing guidance says listings may appear lower in search when primary images are too dark, blurry, or part of a photo collage. Etsy's listing-editing guidance also points sellers to the search visibility tab for image improvements.
So the first-photo checklist is broader than “hit 2000 pixels”:
- adequate resolution,
- sharp and well lit,
- product clearly identifiable,
- not a confusing collage,
- composition works at thumbnail size.
Practical Image-Preparation Checklist
- Start from an original at least 2000 px in both dimensions rather than enlarging a small file.
- Keep the product and essential details near the center with surrounding space for multiple crops.
- Use the same general shape and visual treatment across the gallery when practical.
- Check that color, variation, quantity, and included items agree with the listing text.
- Preview the first image in Etsy's thumbnail adjustment tool.
- Keep the subject clear at mobile thumbnail size and avoid relying on small overlay text.
- Use sRGB when accurate color reproduction matters.
Common Mistakes
- Treating 2000 × 2000 as a mandatory square aspect ratio.
- Uploading a first image below 635 px in either dimension.
- Enlarging a small image and introducing visible pixelation.
- Placing essential product details at an edge that a thumbnail crop can remove.
- Assuming one crop preview represents every Etsy placement.
- Using a dark, blurry, or collage-style primary image and focusing only on dimensions.
- Uploading transparent assets without checking how Etsy renders them.

Do / Don't Example
- Suitable: a sharp 2400 × 2400 px source with the product centered and room for alternate crops.
- Suitable: a high-resolution landscape source whose subject remains clear in square, portrait, and landscape previews.
- Risky: a 600 × 600 px first photo, even if it uploads.
- Risky: a vertical image with essential details at the top and bottom edges.

Etsy Help's current image-requirements page was rechecked September 7, 2026. It supports the 2000 px in both dimensions recommendation, 635 px in both dimensions first-photo threshold, supported image formats, orientation guidance, crop behavior, sRGB conversion, compression note, and upload caution for files over 1 MB. Etsy's current listing-creation page also states that sellers can add up to 20 photos and 2 videos and confirms that the 2000-pixel upload notice is a suggestion rather than a publication block.
