TikTok Profile Photo Size
Quick Answer
TikTok has different image requirements for a normal account profile photo and an In-Feed ad profile photo.
For a normal TikTok account, TikTok Support currently says uploaded profile photos must be at least 20 × 20 pixels. That is a minimum upload requirement, not a quality recommendation.
For TikTok Auction In-Feed Ads, current TikTok Ads Manager guidance separately specifies a 98 × 98 px, 1:1 square profile photo in JPG/JPEG/PNG format, under 50 KB, with the key element kept inside a centered 66 × 66 px safe area to reduce cropping risk.
Do not use the 98 × 98 ad specification as if it were the universal organic TikTok profile-photo rule.

Prepare in one place
Publish Action
Prepare a centered square source image, then export for the profile or ad placement you actually use.
Use one preparation flow for sizes, titles, descriptions, keywords, and checklists instead of switching between separate tools.
Organic Profile Photo: What 20 × 20 Means
TikTok Support's normal profile-photo article only states the minimum upload size: 20 × 20 pixels. It does not mean a 20-pixel image is a good brand asset.
Use a clean, higher-resolution square source so that you can crop and export without visible pixelation. Keep the important face, symbol or logo near the center because TikTok's profile presentation can crop the square source into a circular or rounded display depending on surface and device.
The higher-resolution preparation advice is Dokuntag workflow guidance; the official normal-profile minimum is 20 × 20 px.
Ad Profile Photo: 98 × 98 Is a Separate Spec
Current TikTok Auction In-Feed Ads guidance specifies:
- 98 × 98 px;
- square 1:1;
- JPG, JPEG or PNG;
- less than 50 KB;
- key element centered in a 66 × 66 px safe area.
For Non-Spark Ads, a default image can be used if the optional profile photo is left blank. For Spark Ads, TikTok says the video account's profile photo is used.
This is an advertising-placement requirement and should not be mixed with the normal profile-upload minimum.
Practical Source-Image Workflow
1. Start with a clean square master larger than the final output.
2. Keep the face, icon or logo centered.
3. Avoid tiny words and thin detail that disappear at avatar size.
4. Leave padding around the key element.
5. For an ad export, test the mark inside the 66 × 66 safe area before exporting 98 × 98.
6. For a normal account profile, preview the actual crop in the TikTok app before saving.
Common Mistakes
- Calling 98 × 98 the universal TikTok profile-photo requirement.
- Calling 20 × 20 a recommended quality target instead of the minimum upload size.
- Uploading a wide banner and squeezing it into a square.
- Putting text or a logo edge outside the central crop area.
- Using a complex full wordmark that becomes unreadable at small size.
- Preparing a Spark Ad profile image separately without checking that Spark Ads use the connected video-account profile photo.
Before You Publish
- Decide whether you are preparing a normal TikTok profile or an ad-placement profile image.
- Use a high-quality square master.
- Keep the main visual centered.
- For organic profile use, confirm the uploaded file is at least 20 × 20 px and preview the actual crop.
- For Auction In-Feed Ads, export 98 × 98 px, 1:1, JPG/JPEG/PNG, under 50 KB, with the key element inside the central 66 × 66 px area.
Publish Action
Use Publish to keep one square brand master and create placement-specific exports from it. Do not overwrite the original high-resolution source with the 98 × 98 ad export.

Reference context
- Reviewed
TikTok Support and TikTok Ads Manager were rechecked on September 7, 2026. TikTok Support documents the normal profile-photo upload minimum of 20 × 20 px. TikTok Ads Manager separately documents the 98 × 98 px / 1:1 / <50 KB / 66 × 66 safe-zone profile-photo specification for Auction In-Feed Ads.
Last checked: September 7, 2026. TikTok can change profile rendering and advertising specifications independently, so always distinguish account-profile requirements from ad-placement requirements.
