Shopify Product Title Guide
Quick Answer
Shopify has two title concepts that are easy to confuse:
1. the product title, which names the item in your store; and
2. the search engine listing title (SEO title), which controls the title shown to search engines when you customize it.
Shopify's current Help Center says a product's search-engine title can use up to 70 characters. Shopify also recommends considering 60 characters or fewer to reduce the chance of a shortened title in search results. If you leave the SEO title blank, Shopify can use the product title for the search-engine listing.
Do not treat 60 or 70 characters as a universal hard limit for the visible product name itself. Keep the product name concise because themes, collection cards, mobile layouts, and search results can truncate long text.
Next, check the draft with Product Title Checker, then review the Shopify product description guide and launch checklist.
Quick Reference
| Field | Current working rule | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Product title | Required product-identification field | Name the item clearly; Shopify Help does not present the 70-character SEO limit as the product-name limit |
| SEO title | Up to 70 characters | This is the search-engine listing title |
| Search-result guidance | Consider 60 characters or fewer | Shopify recommends this to reduce title shortening in search results |
| SEO fallback | Product title can be used | If a separate SEO title is not entered, the product title can become the search-engine listing title |

Prepare in one place
Publish Action
Draft a clear product name and a separate search-engine title before publishing.
Use one preparation flow for sizes, titles, descriptions, keywords, and checklists instead of switching between separate tools.
Product Title vs SEO Title
A useful preparation workflow is to write the product identity first, then decide whether the search-engine title needs a different version.

Practical Product-Title Guidance
- Make the product type obvious near the beginning.
- Add brand, model, material, size, color, quantity, or another differentiator only when it helps identify the exact item.
- Put variant-specific values in variant fields when that is how the product is structured.
- Avoid keyword chains, promotional claims, shipping promises, or repeated synonyms.
- Check the title on a mobile product card and collection grid, not only in the admin form.
SEO-Title Guidance
- Keep the main product phrase near the beginning.
- Treat 70 characters as Shopify's SEO-title input limit, not a promise that every search engine will display all 70.
- Consider 60 characters or fewer when you want a lower truncation risk.
- Keep the title readable rather than filling every available character.
- Keep the URL handle stable unless a change is necessary; Shopify warns that frequent handle changes can affect search visibility.
Common Mistakes
- Calling the 70-character SEO-title limit the universal Shopify product-name limit.
- Using a vague internal name such as
Product 1orModel Xwithout saying what the item is. - Copying marketplace-style keyword stuffing into the storefront product name.
- Assuming a long title that fits in Shopify admin will display cleanly in every theme or search result.
- Changing the product URL handle repeatedly while testing title ideas.
Before You Publish
- Confirm the product title identifies the exact item.
- Check the separate search-engine listing preview.
- Keep the SEO title within 70 characters and consider a shorter version if the preview is crowded.
- Compare the title with variants, images, description, URL handle, and structured product data.
- Preview collection cards and mobile layouts for visible truncation.
Publish Action
Use the Product Title Checker to compare title variants before publishing. Then review Shopify image alt text and the Shopify launch checklist.

Reference context
- Reviewed
Shopify Help was rechecked on September 7, 2026. The product editor documentation distinguishes product data from the editable search-engine listing. Shopify states that search-engine titles can use up to 70 characters and separately recommends considering titles up to 60 characters to reduce shortening in search results.
Last checked: September 7, 2026. Search-result display can change by device and search engine, so use Shopify's current preview and the live storefront as the final presentation check.
